PRINCIPLE 

The drawing shows a pump head with tubing.•The advancing roller occludes the tube.•It recovers to the normal size and draws in fluid which is then trapped by the next roller.•The fluid is then finally expelled from the pump.
This is the peristaltic flow-inducing action, and the full occlusion of the tube provides positive displacement. The tube's elasticity provides suction lift, its strength provides pressure handling ability, its flex characteristics determine its pumping life on its bore depends the flow rate, and on it wall thickness depends its pumping efficiency.
